Sliding friction between an elastomer network and a grafted polymer layer: the role of cooperative effects
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the friction between a flat solid surface where polymer chains have been end-grafted and a cross-linked elastomer at low sliding velocity. The contribution of isolated grafted chains’ penetration in the sliding elastomer has been early identified as a weakly velocity dependent pull-out force. Recent experiments have shown that the interactions between the grafted chains at high grafting density modify the friction force by grafted chain. We develop here a simple model that takes into account those interactions and gives a limit grafting density σl beyond which the friction no longer increases with the grafting density, in good agreement with the experimental data.

Role of Surface-Anchored Polymer Chains on the Adhesion of an Elastomer
We study the adhesion between an elastomer of cross-link index, P, and a flat solid surface where polymer chains of polymerisation index, N, have been end-grafted. To understand the adhesive feature of such a system, one has to study both the origin of the grafted layer interdigitation with the network and the end-grafted chain extraction out of the elastomer when it separates from the solid su...

We shall tackle here the fir...
متن کاملVelocity dependence of friction of confined hydrocarbons.
We present molecular dynamics friction calculations for confined hydrocarbon "polymer" solids with molecular lengths from 20 to 1400 carbon atoms. Two cases are considered: (a) polymer sliding against a hard substrate and (b) polymer sliding on polymer. We discuss the velocity dependence of the frictional shear stress for both cases. In our simulations, the polymer films are very thin (approxim...

One of the problems for use of rubber in various industries is surface tension at the surface of rubbers, which results in the crack on the surface, fracture of the rubber and reduces its life. These tensions are caused by contacting the rubber component with the metal surface and the friction between two surfaces. Roughness of the surface, the composition of the rubber compound, the environmen...
